How do NHL player props work?

An NHL player prop is a bet on one player's numbers in one game — will Connor McDavid get over 3.5 shots, will a goalie make over 27.5 saves — instead of who wins. Lines go live on game days once bookmakers post them, usually the morning of the game. The 2026-27 season starts in early October, with preseason games from late September — our NHL props board fills with model-checked picks the moment real lines appear.

The markets you'll actually see

PropWhat you're bettingWorth knowing
Shots on goalOver/under a player's shots that hit the netThe most commonly posted skater prop — steadier than goals
Points (goals + assists)Over/under a player's combined pointsUsually set at 0.5 or 1.5 for stars

AssistsOver/under assistsLinemates matter as much as the player
Goalie savesOver/under the goalie's save countDriven by the other team's shot volume

How the lines work

Each prop has a line (the number, like 2.5 shots) and a price for over and under. The half-numbers mean there's no tie — over 2.5 needs three or more. Prices are rarely even on both sides: the bookmaker leans the price toward the side the public likes, which is exactly where careful bettors go looking for soft spots.

Props are priced with less attention than the main lines — there are hundreds of them every night and bookmakers can't watch them all equally. That's why props are where a stats model earns its keep, and why they're the market our system focuses hardest on.

When props go live — the daily rhythm

  • Morning (game day): bookmakers post prop lines for the night's slate.
  • Midday: our model prices every line against its own numbers and puts the ones it likes on the NHL props board — each with plain-words confidence, never jargon.
  • Late lines move: injuries and goalie confirmations shift props fast. A price that was good at noon can be gone by six.
For the 2026-27 season

Preseason games begin in late September 2026 and the regular season opens in early October. Prop markets are thin during preseason and fill out from opening night. Bookmark the props board — it switches on as soon as real lines exist, never before. We don't publish picks on markets that aren't live; an empty board is honest, not broken.

How we pick ours

Our model builds its own number for every posted line — from player game logs, matchups, and situation — then compares it to the bookmaker's price. Only lines where our number clearly beats the price make the board, each shown with confidence in words (HIGH, LEAN) and the dollars-and-cents logic spelled out. Every pick is graded publicly on the results page, wins and losses alike.

Quick answers

When do NHL player props start for 2026-27?

With the season: preseason games run from late September 2026 and the regular season opens in early October. Bookmakers post props for preseason games sparingly; full prop menus arrive with opening night.

What's the best NHL prop for beginners?

Shots on goal. It's the steadiest market, the lines are easy to understand, and a player's shot volume is more predictable game-to-game than goals or assists.

Are NHL props easier to beat than the moneyline?

They're priced with less scrutiny than main lines, which means more soft spots — but also lower bet limits and faster line moves. It's where data helps most, not a shortcut.

Do props count if the game goes to overtime?

Skater props almost always include overtime (not shootouts). House rules differ at the margins — check your bookmaker's settlement rules.
