What is a fair price in betting?

A fair price is what the odds would be if the bookie took no cut, so it matches the real chance of the result.

Example: A coin toss is a 1-in-2 chance, so its fair price is $2.00. A bookie offers $1.91 on each side instead. Bet $100 on both sides and you get $191 back for $200: the bookie keeps $9.

If you can get more than the fair price, the bet is good value. If you get less, you pay for it over time.

Our free fair price calculator works it out from the prices on both sides.

As of 5 October, the bookies keep about $5 of every $100 bet on who-wins bets across the games we track.
