What is a handicap bet in soccer?

A handicap bet gives one team a head start in goals, so a strong team must win by more for your bet to win.

Example: Bet $10 on Arsenal -1.5 at $2.10. Arsenal must win by 2 goals or more for you to get $21 back. Asian handicap lines like -0.25 split your bet across two lines.

Handicaps turn an uneven match into a closer bet.

Whole-goal handicaps, like -1, can end in a push: if Arsenal win by exactly 1, you get your stake back.

As of 5 October, the bookies keep about $4 of every $100 bet on Premier League handicap bets.
